General Description:
Located within Dos Ojos Park, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, El Pit is a massive, bell-shaped sinkhole plunging down to over 100 meters (300+ feet). World-renowned for its surreal lighting display, it features a piercing vertical beam of sunlight that cuts through crystal-clear water on sunny days, illuminating the deep blue abyss. At around 30 meters (100 feet), divers encounter an ethereal floating layer of hydrogen sulfide cloud with sunken tree branches emerging from the mist, framed by ancient geological formations. It is an absolute bucket-list experience for certified advanced divers.
Key Features:
- Diving Level: Advanced Open Water certification or higher required with excellent buoyancy control.
- Maximum Depth: 30 meters / 100 feet (Recreational deep dive limit).
- Visibility: Exceptional (50+ meters / 160+ feet in the upper freshwater zone; low visibility inside the hydrogen cloud).
- Water Temperature: Constant 24 °C – 25 °C (75 °F – 78 °F) year-round.
